- Hello Lea and Happy New
Year:
- The contact information you
have for us is correct. But I warn you - you may have opened a Pandora's
box by asking for an update on dear, dear Spud. Doesn't everyone love to
brag about their kids and pets ? - and we are no different. At 3 and a
half year's old, Spud is often mistaken for a much younger pup, partly because
she has a small stature and also because she has such as interested and engaging
personality. No matter how disciplined she is while walking, often off
leash, as soon as she spies another human being, she makes a dash for them,
never jumps up, but just to greet and make herself known. She can
initially be a bit submissive with other dogs, usually just sits quietly while
they sniff around, but once that's over with she resumes her favourite
activity, sniffing out and consuming tiny twigs - not a very good habit but one
we have not been able to break. She is happiest at home beside one of us,
whether we are on the computer or working in the kitchen, she is splayed out
pretty much in the middle of things. Our daughter moved out west earlier
this year and that has been sad for all of us, she was the one who really
rough-housed with Spud, but it is pretty joyful when they do get together.
Spud can be coaxed into trying new things - like sitting in the kayak in
the second picture - she now waits to go in every time I go out. We
haven't fallen in yet. And if we did, she wouldn't mind that either, she
loves swimming, especially if there is a tennis ball thrown into the water.
Did I mention tennis balls? - her greatest passion, she can sniff
them out of any bush, or trail, we rarely come home from a walk where she
hasn't discovered one. And attach it to a throwing arm and you have her
undivided attention for as long as you want.
-
- We have had some health
issues. At about 10 months old she contracted masticatory myositis which
affected the muscles around her jaw and head. It was successfully treated
with high doses of Prednisone, but unfortunately it has returned now 3 times.
We seem to catch it pretty early and by now of course we know the signs.
We just completed the last course of steroids and she will now stay on a
preventative dose probably for the rest of her life. It has resulted in
her having a slightly bony head and thin jaw line, but she is putting back the
weight she had lost and finally feeling herself again. The high doses of
steroids make her feel quite unwell and changes her personality to being much
more skittish, so we are all delighted she has settled back to her normal
chipper self. We fervently hope the maintenance dose will keep the
myositis as bay. If you have any experience with this problem -
your expertise and advice would be welcome.
-
- Spud lives a pretty charmed
life, between our house in Ottawa and a large house in Minden with lots of
farmer's fields around; she gets lots of outdoor time and seems to be a
pretty contented girl. Thanks Lea, for your ongoing interest - we feel
really lucky to have her.
-
- Regards,
- Jane Adams, Gordon Graham.
